Sources of information
- 1881 census. There is a Barnett Lichtenstein boarding at 2 Plough Street, Whitechapel. Born Russia. A tailor. Age 40. The 'Rich' Steins
Family story of a connection to a Lichtenstein family who were diamond brokers. There is a Jacob Lichtenstein (born approx 1857 'Russia') 'diamond broker' and his family living in Hackney. This is the only family on the 1891 England and Wales census that list their profession as diamond brokers.
The Booth Buildings
Address for the Lichtenstein family as at 01/03/86 (Jewish Free school admission records)
The following is an extract from the Booth archive collection which describes some of the streets visited on walks with police officers in the period of the late 1890's:
'Booth Buildings - Look very rough, very poor, all Jews, broken windows stuffed with rags. Dirty, no curtains or blinds to windows only a bit of stuff drawn across lower half, ragged dirty children'.
